I got tagged by the good folks on Tumblr and thought I'd crosspost :)

1. Who is your fave character and why?

I enjoy OuaT as an ensemble piece, because I think that each of the show’s characters is adding something unique to the mix. But, well, my favourite, yes, definitely Killian Jones /Hook. ;)

I guess could name all his qualities now, starting with the traits he displayed right from the start, such as his intelligence or the cocky way he kept his head high even when hopelessly overpowered or out-magicked.

But in the end, it all comes down to the stuff that unfolded later and made Killian one of the most ruthless, most uncompromising romantics I have ever seen on TV. Whatever dark places this pirate has been in (and I really don’t want to whitewash the fact that Killian butchered quite a number of innocents in his day), I figure he never really lost his innate sense of wonder, his sense for personal freedom (his own freedom as well as the freedom of others) and the ability to be touched and to truly, madly, deeply love against all odds.

2. Favourite recurring character? (Not a main character)

A close tie between Ruby and Whale. (I’m counting Cora as a villain, not as a recurring here, otherwise it would have been her.)

3. What was your favourite S1 moment?

That scene from 1.14 “Dreamy”, when Nova accidentally sprinkles a bit of fairy dust on the yet unhatched Dreamy’s egg. Pure magic. Sweet, symbolic, evocative, plus a lovely bit of world building.

4. Favourite overall moment?
Killian embracing Neal and making his peace with him in 3.15 “Quiet Minds”. Such a perfect episode, such an intense moment.

5. What is something you wish you could change?

Milah being thrown into the River of Lost Souls.

6. If you could see more of a background character, who would it be?

Any of the dwarves. I just love the way they interact with each other and the sense of humour that they add to the show.

7. Who is a character you wish you could like but can’t?
Merlin. Nothing wrong with the character per se, but the actor who portrayed him always felt a bit bland to me. I figure, to convince me of the whole “young, pretty Merlin” concept, I would have needed someone like American Gods' Ricky Whittle. Mid thirties instead of mid twenties and pulling off “charismatic” like whoah.

comments

Somewhere in a galaxy far, far away the good old "Name your top five OTPs" meme is making the rounds again. And as I've always wondered how I might answer this particular challenge, I thought, well let's give it a try.

My OTPs, though, might not be “true pairings” in the classical sense. While there are certainly quite a few canon and fanon relationships that I fancy, I’m afraid I’ve never been enough of a shipper to make the OPT concept work for me ;-)). Therefore I’d rather list my current top five cases of a broader, more abstract type of love, the kind that drives, nurtures and consoles people, or just defines a major part of their very essence:

Obi-Wan Kenobi/ The Force
Malcolm Reynolds/ Serenity (and the things that she represents)
Londo Mollari / Centauri Prime
Gaius Baltar/ Survival (a study in irony and absurdness)
Killian Jones/ the Sea

comments

Back from a wonderfully relaxing summer holiday in Thuringia (covering the historical cities of Erfurt and Weimar, followed by a week of hiking through the Thuringian forest).

Somehow I feel like having a bit of silly writing fun, so this meme spotted over at astrogirl2 's seems just about right *g*

1.
Ages ago, there was this meme where you had to come up with one sentence mini ficlets. One fandom, various genres. I started writing, but never got around to posting, because I misplaced the sheet of paper containing the handwritten drafts.

Guess, what I've just found while clearing up my desk. So, here we go, better late than never. The fandom is Babylon Five.

Angst: Sometimes, when Thalia looks into a mirror, she is haunted by the dead girl that used to inhabit this very flesh.

AU: "Welcome to Babylon Five, Mr. Morden," Laurel Takashima said, "We've already been expecting your arrival."

Humor: Delenn looked at the state her husband had left the kitchen in, puzzled.

Crossover: Julian Bashir extended his hand, wondering whether this strange, unexpected colleague of his would be interested in exchanging notes on Alien diseases.

Death: Once he had spotted the Vorlon next to his bedside, his final moments were almost too much.

comments

The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows

selenak gave me an F of all possible letters.

Francesca Vecchio (DueSouth): Younger sister of Ray. Lively. Chaotic. Determined. A natural at driving even the calmest and most patient people completely nuts. Courageous, a dreamer. Very particular, somewhat over the top clothing style. Not exactly healthy attraction to Fraser, but otherwise suprisingly good judgement skills. The love-hate relationship she has with her brother runs rather deeply and is highly enjoyable to watch. Often brings out Ray's softer, protective side. Also: the actress in question, Ramona Milano rocks big time.

Fee Cleary (Thorn Birds, TV mini series): Mother of Meggie. Very calm, in a rather odd way extremely dignified, distant character. Her relationship with her children as well as with her husband seems to be overshadowed by inner struggle between diverging emotions. Bitterness. Resignation. Love. Jean Simmons portrays these subcurrents in a wonderful way.

Freder Fredersen (Metropolis): Okay, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Metropolis, so my views on Freder might be rather biased. Well-meaning but naive, especially in his first couple of scenes. Actor Gustav Fröhlich makes this character appear strangely soft.

Fiona (Four Weddings and a Funeral): Sharp witted, somewhat cynical. I rather liked how she finally admitted her secret feelings for Hugh Grant's character, even though I had seen this revelation coming right from the start. Oh, and when I first saw the movie at our local cinema, I applauded when she got Prince Charles in the end! Kristin Scott Thomas is just fab in this role.

Frank Drebbin (The Naked Gun): Complex, angst-ridden, and haunted by a terrible and tragic past. Not. I think it suffices to say he was played by Leslie Nielsen ;-)

comments

I guess the only thing preventing me from writing it all down and publishing it somewhere is the fact that this was still the mid 1980s.

First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans: In person: ST: TOS, at a way earlier age than most people do. Thanks to my dad, I had all the advantages and contacts that come with being the second generation fan and not the fannish pioneer of my family. My first online interaction with other fans took place sometime during the 1990s, X Files and also the absolutely fantastic German ER Mailing list.

Pairing in the first slash fanfiction I read: Highlander, Duncan MacLeod/Methos. While I wasn't quite convinced of the DM/M pairing, some of my favourite authors were, so I simply followed them wherever they chose to go, simply because the quality of their writing spoke for itself. I think that this reading experience of continuously dealing with a fannish reality that isn't quite mine has had a huge impact on my interest in alternative character interpretations, alternative perspectives.

First fanfiction I read that made me think, 'YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write...' :
The first one that hat this kind of impact on me? Well, that would be "Leap of Faith" , a full-blown novella length X Files/Quantum Leap crossover by Livengoo. It took me years to realize that no matter how much I might love novellas and other, lengthier pieces, my own, personal talent as a writer clearly lies with what I tend to call "short distance stories", seldom exceeding 1000 words.

Pairing in the first fanfiction I wrote: Well, to be honest, I fear my writing brain doesn't seem to work along the lines of pairings, however attractive or fascinating those might be. I'll gladly make use of an established canon or fanon relationship between characters once in a while, but that's not really what my stuff is about.

First OTP: Fraser/Thatcher, dueSouth.

First RPS/F OTP: I fear, I don't really have one, at least not in the conventional fannish sense.

First fannish friend I met in person: We are talking about online friends met in person, here, aren't we? Well that would definitely be selenak, followed by kathyh.

First character I formally roleplayed: Well, for about a year or so I was albert_campion over at Theatrical Muse.

comments
