Last weekend, at the annual meeting of my favourite German language posting board, I learned about what looks like an absolute fun method of getting rid of spare or unwanted books.
To me, the whole concept sounds as simple as brilliant, since it appears to tackle the classic dilemma of any decent, self-respecting book lover ("how can I save my poor, overladen shelves from collapsing without having to commit the criminal act of coldblooded book abandonment?") from an entirely new and fascinating perspective *g* Here is some info taken from the Bookcrossing.com website:
While I do not own too many books which I'd consider dispensable (two or three German translations of novels I later also bought in English and a few Christmas gifts from relatives who never bothered to ask me about my reading taste) I find the idea of releasing books into the wilderness quite appealing, since there is a certain element of chance and chaos to it *g*

The "3 Rs" of BookCrossing...
-- Read a good book (you already know how to do that)
-- Register it here (along with your journal comments), get a unique BCID (BookCrossing ID number), and label the book
-- Release it for someone else to read (give it to a friend, leave it on a park bench, donate it to charity, "forget" it in a coffee shop, etc.), and get notified by email each time someone comes here and records journal entries for that book. And if you make Release Notes on the book, others can Go Hunting for it and try to find it!
Sounds easy, right? Well it is. It's also a fascinating exercise in fate, karma, or whatever you want to call the chain of events that can occur between two or more lives and one piece of literature. Oh, and we should mention, it's absolutely free and absolutely private, too.
So go grab a book or two from your shelves now (they're not doing anyone any good there, are they?), register them here, jot down our URL and the BCID we'll give you inside the covers, and then give them away or leave them where someone will find them.
