A book I love no matter what anyone says:Stephen King's Tommyknockers. A much underestimated reflection on human obsessions. The erratic flow of the narrative mirrors the book's content perfectly.
A book I loathe no matter what anyone says:Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Nathan the Wise. Yes, I know. A central piece of Enlightenment literature. Plea for religious tolerance and forgiveness. The famous Ring parable. Unfortunately that doesn't stop me from being annoyed by the play's dramaturgical structure.
An undeservedly obscure book:Alexander Trocchi, Young Adam. Finally received it's own little bit of fame and acknowledgement after being turned into a movie starring Ewan McGregor. However, it's also a twisted, dark little gem of European beat literature. If Trocchi hadn't managed to offend anyone important in the British literary circles by his behaviour, this one could have easily become canon.
An undeservedly famous book:Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens. An originally brilliant joke, stretched thin by too many repetitions. Also too many characters. Starts out hilarious but becomes boring after the first 150 pages.
A book I ought to read:Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno, Dialectic of Enlightenment
A book I think others ought to read (I think,I'll name two books since I'm feeling missionary today *g*):Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet On The Western Front, still one of literature's most convincing pleas for pacifism.
Max Weber, Die Protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus (rough translation for English-speaking readers: Protestant Ethics and the Spirit of Capitalism), though its first draft is almost 100 years old it's still one of the best and most fascinating works on the far-reaching sociological consequences of Puritanism.
